Explore Oaxaca
/Oaxaca is an enchanting cultural and historic destination in Mexico. It is a city of delicious cuisine, natural wonders, UNESCO sites, vibrant streets, colorful buildings, mezcal making and Spanish colonial architecture! Which is why it is listed as a Pueblo Magico (magical city) and why the entire city center is considered a world heritage site! You will undoubtedly fall in love with this magical city when you travel with Driftwood Adventure Treks November 9-16, 2022.
Driftwood Adventures has joined forces with Tlayudona, who works with predominately women hosts and artisans. It's a very hands on trip, not just with your camera but in learning how local artists work.
Explore Monte Alban as well as Hierve El Aqua. Monte Alban is an archeological UNESCO site that has been around since the 6th century BCE. Here we will visit ancient pyramids, terraces and canals along with other ruins. To stand on these ruins and imagine what it must have been like all those years ago is unreal!
Hierve El Aqua is a set of natural rock formations that resemble cascades. The site consists of two tall cliffs where fresh water springs create natural pools. However, the water is oversaturated with minerals, this causes the water to turn into rock as it trickles down the cliffs. This is why it looks like a petrified waterfall, creating a spectacular natural wonder.
Explore the streets markets. The vibrant and bustling covered markets make a great setting for photography workshops as we shop for produce, look at crafts and textiles and try the fresh food. There is no better way to understand this city than to wander through the markets and experience all the colors, smells and flavors of Oaxaca all at once. Later that afternoon we will enjoy a cooking lesson where we will learn how to make traditional Oaxacan mole and more!.
Oaxaca carries one of the richest pre-hispanic culinary traditions in Mexico! From ancient ingredients to age-old cooking techniques you do not want to skip the opportunity to learn about Oaxaca’s world-known gastronomy!!!
Explore the Zocalo. El Zocalo is a public tree lined bustling square in the center of Oaxaca, great for street photography! It is surrounded by vendors, restaurants and historic buildings. I love to get lost when I travel. You never know what you will find. The streets of Oaxaca are very colorful and walkable. You will find yourself surrounded by beautiful art, gourmet restaurants, craft vendors, roof top bars, street food, cafes and more. With the beautiful mountains in the distance everywhere you look you have the perfect photo-op!
Explore Mezcal. Sure, you may have enjoyed a shot or two of mezcal at a bar, Mexican restaurant, or even on a trip to Mexico. But how much do you really know about this smoky spirit? The agave-based alcohol is produced primarily in the Mexican state of Oaxaca and depending on who's making it, ingredients may include anything from pineapple to raw chicken breast. We will spend the day learning about the Mezcal process from start to finish - of course with a lot of test tasting!
