Trekking in Ethiopia
/When one thinks of trekking they don’t usually think of Ethiopia. Ethiopia is like nowhere I have ever traveled. It is a beautiful country full of history, incredible wildlife and some of Africa’s most soulful and generous people.
One thing that separates us from most trekking companies is our focus on cultural immersion. We partner with Tesfa Tours for a community-based trek. What does this mean? As we trek through the Tigray and Amhara regions we stay in local guest houses run by the local communities. After a day of hiking we are greeted with a coffee ceremony followed by an authentic Ethiopian feast. I have to say the food is my favorite part! So fresh and incredible, especially the homemade honey in the morning with fresh ground coffee!
Our next area to explore is the Semien Mountains. Quite the contrast from the desert like fauna of the Tigray region. For starters, there’s the uninterrupted views of endless high peaks amidst vast, green valleys that stretch as far as the eye can see. Here there are 2 options, to camp or stay in a lodge. I often find that after 4-5 days “roughing it” clients look forward to the Lodge, but we can do either! Our days are full of beautiful day hikes with incredible views and wildlife. You will encounter the Gelada Baboons and often the extremely rare Walia Ibex while hiking Ethiopia’s highest peaks guided by local guides.
