This tour starts in Tokyo, known as the sleepless city full of organized mayhem. Although Tokyo is concrete and neon, we will explore the pockets of hidden tradition. We will visit iconic land marks such as the Imperial Palace and the Sensoji Temple, wander the Solamachi street market as well as the Tsukiji outer fish market, where we can practice street photography, and evenings will be spent trying exotic cuisine Japanese style in some of Tokyo’s most delectable restaurants.
Next is the famous bullet train to Kyoto. No visit to Japan is complete without a few days in Kyoto. The deep history, architecture, textures and smells, perfection in artistry, and “wa” of the cultured temple grounds are organically woven into the Japanese psyche. After immersing ourselves in the modern city of Tokyo, we will explore the smaller places of self-reflection and spartan zen of the ancient capital. Be ready to experience craftsmanship in every dish, learn the art of tea ceremonies, and even try your hand at traditional Japanese art painting.
Last stop is a deeper adventure into the “Pure Land” of Japan, the island region of Shikoku. We will set out on a 3-4 day pilgrimage known as the “Shikoku henro (四国遍路)” or the “88 pilgrimage.” This is a historic Buddhist route established over 1,200 years ago. Inspired by a monk named Kūkai (who founded Shingon Buddhism), the pilgrimage and its customs are deeply ingrained in the people of Shikoku: Japan’s way of life. For many this can be a life changing journey! Along the way we will eat delicious local specialities, stay in traditional Japanese lodging, visit awe inspiring temples and have the opportunity to talk with the locals.
The photography options on this trip will be endless. Many opportunities for street photography, portraits, landscape, night photography and more. We will travel off the beaten path immersing ourselves in the Japanese culture and visiting places most travelers do not have access to. However, you do not need to be a photographer to enjoy this venture…
